We attended World Innovation Day 2025 at the new GOe building of the Basque Culinary Center in San Sebastián. The fourteenth edition, organized by Innobasque | Basque Innovation Agency, was themed “From Science to Innovation.”
San Sebastián, the city that recently inaugurated IBM’s quantum computer and is a candidate for European Capital of Innovation, has become a symbol of innovation. The conference brought together science, technology, health, and sustainability, becoming a showcase for advanced projects being developed in the Basque Country:
💧 Surphase (Iliane Rafaniello) presented a disruptive solution developed to combat water scarcity, demonstrating its ability to purify water using nanotechnology.
🚗 Gestamp (Aloña Auzmendi), with its vision of a sustainable future for the automotive industry, presented production solutions that utilize robotics and artificial intelligence.
🧬 Oncomatryx Biopharma-k (Pedro Esnaola) shared promising results for an innovative drug to combat metastatic cancer. The Bizi program, an initiative of the Osakidetza Mental Health Network (Andrea Gabilondo) in Gipuzkoa, stood out as an innovative model based on suicide prevention.

🔋 H2SITE-k (Gorka Hermoso) presented materials science-based solutions to facilitate the production of green hydrogen and, in particular, its transport, in collaboration with TECNALIA Research & Innovation and Eindhoven University of Technology.
Reflections on climate change were also shared by María José Sanz Sánchez (BC3 – Basque Centre for Climate Change) and Humberto Llavador (Pompeu Fabra University – Barcelona). Finally, the meeting culminated with the active participation of young people, who reflected on the sustainable future of plastics.🌍
